Accommodation Levy Information Resources

Across Canada Levies on Accommodation vary from 2% to 5%. This PDF provides a wide range of comparisons from across Canada and internationally.

70,000 visitors came to our city in 2016 and spent over $90 million. That makes tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of our Yellowknife economy. To continue to grow tourism the City of Yellowknife is asking the territorial government for authority to collect a levy on short term accommodation. The money collected will be used to market Yellowknife as a major tourism destination.

Key considerations and options for the Accomodation Levy and DMO.

Results from a Yellowknife-wide survey in the Spring on 2017 on the Accommodation Levy.

DMO Information Resources

Destination Marketing Organizations are organized as separate not-for-profits. This PDF provides comparisons of how DMOs are organized in cities across Canada. Each accommodates local issues of focus, governance, activities and funding.

Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) do three things.  First they vigorously market their city or region.  Second they showcase the attractions, activities and experiences that visitors will find in their city.  Third they work with their community, and its tourism businesses, to make sure visitors have great experiences that will bring them back and encourage their friends to visit as well.

This document provides information to assist in identifying choices and making decisions about the creation of an Accommodation Levy and the choices to be made and the recommended actions taken to bring a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for the City of Yellowknife into existence.
